What should I do with S5 Bobby?

wheelchair, then magical healing, as per canon

My concerns are, one, if I do permanent wheelchair, I want to do it in a way that won't hurt any of my readers. Two, if I do no wheelchair, that's taking away a canonical character-with-disability, which also has potential to hurt my readers. Three, if I don't do as per canon (and I've heard all the complaints about as per canon so I don't want to do as per canon, see also 'won't hurt my readers'), either I've screwed up the plot of the episodes that require wheelchair!Bobby or I've screwed up the plot of the episodes that require walking!Bobby. I don't want indirect effects of my AU premise to overtake the direct effects.

If every option has the potential to hurt somebody somewhere (which I think is probably true of *everything*) then it seems like you just do what works best for the story you want to tell and try to do it in an honest, sensitive way.

*nods*

I'm not sure which it is, though, it's only today I realized I'd have to deal with the effects of my AU premise on Bobby too.

Your options don't *displease* me, but my answer is more "depends."

I'm not a Supernatural fan, but overall, I think if you're writing a non-AU story, stick to canon. You can always dovetail from canon in any direction you want postcanon, but I think it's a bit of a copout to change canon just because you don't like it. There are always ways to "fix" things you don't like (wrong couple together, for example) post-canon without negating canon.

If your story is by design AU, then whatever works best for your story/character needs. If you need your character to be able to walk, have him be healed. If he serves your story and/or his character arc better remaining in a wheelchair, do it that way. Your story will work better and be more respectful of diversity if you let the characters be what they need to be rather than forcing them to be one way or another for some reason not story or character related.

It is definitely AU, and Bobby not getting the injury lands him in a wheelchair is a definite potential consequence of the premise. It's just, whatever way I turn is complicated.

Thanks for the input, though!

Would "magical healing had only partial/not-permanent effect" work for your purpose? Like, he was able to walk again, but found out he had lower stamina/poor balance/pain/whatever and decided at some point to use a wheelchair again even though not strictly needing to?

I...do not know. It is a thought worth contemplating!

I will confess I voted for "wheelchair" not because of any plot or visibility related reasons, but because I really like the story possibilities presented by characters on wheels (and not in a "disability fic" way, in a "make technology do awesome stuff" way.)

...so if you do have him keep the chair, you should have him soup it up a lot more than he did in canon. Canon really dropped the ball on that.

THAT EXACTLY.

If you want to have him keep the wheels but have plot issues with later episodes where he walks, could you fix them by giving him a more versatile chair & have him get better with it than canon bothered with? Because honestly unless the plot depends on him specifically using his feet, there aren't that many things somebody who's already at Bobby levels of awesome shouldn't be able to do in a chair, if he can mod the chair...

This post by a manual wheelchair user has some excellent thoughts on what Bobby's chair could be and what he (and other paraplegic action heroes) could be doing with it (and also some really cool videos of wheelchair stunts and people going up stairs).

I don't want indirect effects of my AU premise to overtake the direct effects.

And that right there is why I haaaaate writing episode/season rewrites. Dealing with tiddly details over the long haul is so. annoying. You have all my sympathies. Good luck!
