Dad just confirmed that Mom and my siblings and I are Mayflower descendants. Myles Standish, one of the signers of the Mayflower Compact. Having undertaken, for the Glory of God, and advancements of the Christian faith and honor of our King and Country, a voyage to plant the first colony in the Northern parts of Virginia [...] Also responsible for more Native American deaths than I particularly care to think about.

Well, nearly everyone with European ancestry is descended from Charlemagne.

I'm descended from James K. Polk's brother. Who owned a massive plantation in the antebellum South. Can't do a thing about your ancestors, and it's something that cannot be considered your fault by anyone worth listening to for a second.

Mom's reaction to finding out we're Mayflower descendants can be summed up by "*bounce* SQUEE". (Followed by complaints about the educational system on her discovery that one of my sisters didn't know Standish's name.) In fact the general reaction around here is that this is something to be proud of.

Which. Um.

Er, yeah, that's... ugh. I don't get being proud of being descended from someone either, as again, you had nothing to do with it. But in your case, I'd be in a constant state of cringe. I'd probably send said relative some cold hard facts, but I'm mean that way.
