Okay. Going off to write a little speech to practice until I'm sure I can say it all without talking too fast or slurring or any of the multitudinous things I do that make it not really worth using my voice especially over the phone, and then calling my senators and representative. (ETA: chickened out of the phone bit and can't find a text-based contact form for my rep, but have sent the text of my notspeech to both my senators.) And then probably writing fic involving possessed Supreme Court Justices.

(Posting on said board is homework. This is a new and different experience.) I posted earlier, saying I wasn't so sure of the validity of the assumption. Professor emailed me saying it's not an assumption, it's a proven fact.
Um, Professor? Look at that quote. You wrote that quote. You said it's an assumption. Don't bitch at me for taking you at your word.

NO SHIT. Lowering the Medicare age doesn't do jack shit for anybody younger than the newly lowered age. Now if you want to lower the Medicare age to zero, preferably with the understanding that health care for fetuses falls under the category of health care for pregnant women and that abortions also fall under the category of health care for pregnant women, then we'd be getting somewhere.
On a related note: has anybody actually filibustered anything yet? Because seems to me there's a few people accomplishing a lot of blockading by threatening to filibuster, because everybody always backs down from that threat. Seems to me it's about time to call the bluff.

* Gender will be a mandatory field at account creation, and it will be able to appear public on one's profile. (I can't tell if people with existing gender specification will be defaulted to "nobody can see it" or "everybody can see it".) (Subsequent changelog reading indicates that the public specificity has since been removed. It is unknown whether this is to require public specificity in the future or if it will remain private.)
* LiveJournal is removing the Unspecified option for the gender field. That's right: you get to be male or female. Period. That's it. (Source.)
If this pisses you off as much as it pisses me off, go to Edit Profile and select Unspecified for your gender option. Then, go to http://www.livejournal.com/contact/?dep t=feedback and politely register your displeasure. (The people who read and process Feedback are not the people who make the decisions. They are often the people who are yelling internally about the decisions.)
(This will likely take place at the next code push, which given LJ's history will be either this Thursday or next, so spread the word fast, especially to the genderqueer community. After that point, you will no longer be able to pick "Unspecified" as your gender.)
Here is what I wrote; copy and paste as much as you'd like:
( Feedback letter )
To also reach someone who's higher up the food chain than the poor staff members who have to read and reply to Feedback, also email anjelika@livejournalinc.com who is Anjelika, GM of US operations.
Anybody wants a Dreamwidth invite, poke me, I've got like a dozen.

winter holiday gift-exchange meme
Nov. 18th, 2009 11:07 pmStep One
♥ Make anLJ DW post. It can be public or friends only, whatever you’re most comfortable with. The post should contain your list of ten holiday wishes, and these wishes can be anything - from simple (a fan fiction written about your favorite pairing), to medium (a DVD you want), to really extravagant (a brand new laptop or car).
Just make sure these are wishes for things you really truly want.
Step Two
♥ Skim through your friends list and see who has posted their own wish lists.
Then - and this is the most important part - if you find a wish you can grant, and it’s in your heart to do so, make sure that person’s wish comes true.
Sometimes a person’s trash is another person’s treasure.
If you have a leather jacket you don’t want or a gift certificate you’re never going to use, give it to someone who wants it.
Step Three
♥ Post this wish list any time after November 1st. Then repost it two weeks before Christmas.
♥ You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to.
The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday fairy - to spread the joy.
Gifts can be made anonymously or not, it's your call.
♥ There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached.
Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive.
And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.
(1) Supernatural/Bones fic. Brennan's latest puzzle: there's knife marks and rust spots between two of the victim's lower-back vertebrae, there's no way that knife could have avoided severing his spinal cord, and all indications are that the victim was alive and walking under his own power for at least a year after the injury.
(2) Supernatural/Bones fic. Brennan's latest puzzle: the victim's (victims'?) ribs have all these carvings on them and there's no marks on the surrounding tissue indicating how the carvings got there.
(3) Supernatural fic. Always-a-girl!John.
(4) Supernatural fic. You know how the show is increasingly insistent that SPNverse is Abrahamic-monotheistic, or used to be so and is now atheistic, when the first three seasons made it pretty clear that SPNverse is polytheistic? (Except Faith and Houses of the Holy, which set up this dynamic for seasons four and five.) Take that Abrahamic/atheistic dichotomy and KILL IT. KILL IT DEAD.
(5) Supernatural fic. The angels are obviously not above using unethical means to persuade Dean...well, Ben Braeden isn't the only person out there who's probably Dean's kid. (Just the only one Dean knows about so far.) And judging by Claire Novak, whatever makes Dean and Sam suitable angelic vessels has even odds (if not a guarantee) of being passed on to Dean's kids...
(6) Supernatural fic. Adam Milligan's a fan of Carver Edlund.
(7) Supernatural/Criminal Minds fic. Anything; there's not enough out there.
(8) Supernatural fic. Jake and Ava didn't have any trouble picking up new psychic abilities and Max, Andy, and Ansem had no trouble expanding the ones they started with. Contrast Sam. Something explaining why this is. Bonus if the answer is something Mary did.
(9) Supernatural fic. Remember the Delawarean burgers from Lucifer Rising? The case John was working when Dean encountered those.
(0) Supernatural fic. Something, anything, that acknowledges that seal-breaking and/or Azazel's special kids and/or supernatural shit and the hunting thereof exists outside the continental US.

Nov. 5th, 2009 10:47 pmGuess who forgot to tell the VCR that it's no longer Daylight Savings?
Guess who taped Jeopardy, Wheel, and Vampire Diaries instead of Bones and Supernatural? (And god knows what instead of Big Bang Theory and Castle, which I hadn't gone to watch yet because I'm trying to be a good girl this week and save TV for after studying.)
Guess who is on a dial-up connection that averages 3KB/sec, and whose attempt to download the 350MB files that hour-long episodes tend to be will therefore take until approximately the twelfth of never?
Guess who doesn't have access to high-speed Internet until Monday?
Guess who is in a REALLY FUCKING BAD MOOD.

one of these days mom will learn to not send me wacko-conservative political screeds
Oct. 28th, 2009 10:21 amGot an email forwarded from my mother. Synopsis: an econ professor's class insisted socialism works. Professor said, fine, let's try it: your individual grades will be averaged together and you will succeed or fail as a class. First exam, class average B, annoying the A students and pleasing everybody else. Second exam, the A students wanted a free ride too and everybody else was counting on the A students; class average D. Third exam, everybody was pissed off enough at everybody else that nobody was willing to do the work to improve anybody else's grade; class average F. "[T]he professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed."
And I'm reading this and thinking, somebody has thoroughly missed the point.
Do some people deserve to fail at school due to lack of effort? Since 'failing at school' is hard to define as anything other than getting poor grades and/or getting held back due to not knowing what the grade level's supposed to teach, unquestionably.
Should society and/or government keep them from failing? No, because grade inflation and promoting kids who don't pass defeats the purpose of education.
Do some people deserve to fail at life due to lack of effort? Depends how we're defining terms. I figure a good definition is, somebody who doesn't have enough food or doesn't have a home or doesn't have educational opportunities or can't get what health care he needs when he needs it, or who has to work herself to the bone to provide all of those for herself and her family, is failing at life, and everything else is varying degrees of success. Can we agree on that definition?
By that definition, do some people deserve to fail at life due to lack of effort? Unquestionably NOT.
Should society keep them from failing? YES, because that IS the purpose of society.
Analogy fall down go boom; do you want to insert a quarter to play again?

SPN / K-Ville: Inside Job
Oct. 22nd, 2009 11:41 pmSo I have recently discovered another one of those fabulous series that Fox canceled because Fox is heavy on morons. It's a police procedural (apparently that genre's my new shiny, what with this and NCIS and Bones and Castle and Criminal Minds) set in New Orleans a couple years after Katrina, ten episodes aired that didn't generate high enough ratings for Fox to bring it back after the writers' strike, and one of the episodes guest-stars Mark Pellegrino. Combine that with tonight's rerun of "Sympathy for the Devil", and, well...
Title: "Inside Job"
Rating: PG-13 except for that pesky little F-word.
Summary: Spoilers for Supernatural 5x01 "Sympathy for the Devil" and K-Ville 1x01 "Pilot" and 1x06 "AKA" (on Hulu, I'll wait; if you're outside the US, sorry, I don't know where else to find it). Sarah was supposed to be a means to an end for Quentin, but she gets inside his defenses and the 'Nick' mask he wears for her becomes more real than reality—and then one of his old rivals from New Orleans catches up to him.
Word Count: 500
( you might run on for a long time / run on, ducking and dodging )

In unrelated news, there doesn't seem to be a transcript of Mystery Spot on the Internet. Anywhere. Therefore I am taking it upon myself to transcribe the ep for the SuperWiki. After three and a half hours of work, I've gotten as far as "Sam Winchester cries through sex". Gaaah.

Oct. 15th, 2009 02:30 pmSomething I just noticed: Tricksters target the high and the mighty—the privileged, one might say. And the Trickster can take any appearance he damn well pleases.
So why, in all three of the human shapes we've seen him in, is he appearing as someone with white privilege, male privilege, ableist privilege, and (as far as I can tell) heterosexual privilege and cisgender privilege?
Dammit, show.
